Winnie and Pippi: emotional dependency sticky like honey

Winnie e Pippi: la dipendenza affettiva appiccicosa come il miele

Rhea Doll had already expressed the creepy pop of Winnie and the poutycore of Pippi through the alienating art pop melancholy of Rhea Key 1024.

Vampire Nymph (2022) told the story of a vampire nymph whose sole purpose is to feed on her object of obsession, even though she knows that the latter depends solely on her love. The cruelty of the vampire nymph aimed to show what it feels like to be subjugated by toxic love; Winnie does the same, but in a more realistic vision, where both subjects are bound by toxicity and emotional dependence is as sticky as Winnie the Pooh's honey. This detail gave shape and color to the Winnie doll.

In Rhea Key 1024's album CIVIL BITCH (2020), one suffers from Pippi's state of confusion in being compliant, just like a maid in service, yet harboring conflicting thoughts about her repressed feelings towards others.

Winnie tries to unmask her visible side, which is Pippi (whose nickname comes from a mix of "people pleaser" and the character "Piglet" from Winnie The Pooh), thus the side of us that can't say NO even when it hurts.

“And even if you've been making
fun of me from the start
knowing my conditions
the patches, that make up
my heart I want you back” — Rhea Doll, Winnie (2025)

Pippi, on the other hand, is the essence of the people pleaser but in her state of internal realization, when she understands that such behavior is as human as it is demanded by the society she lives in, and that she can only change if she wants to.

After closing the Rhea Key 1024 project in 2023, Rhea Doll wanted to address the themes of emotional dependence and people-pleasing, having battled the symptoms firsthand.

"At first, I didn't understand why I identified with the maid. Unconsciously, I associated the image of the maid with my behavior at that time. Besides the fact that my music came from a victimhood condition that I wasn't aware of." — in the confession vlog Rhea Key 1024: What really happened on YouTube

People-pleasing and emotional dependence are very common problems, more so than one might think. It's not so much a cultural issue as an educational one, originating in childhood and then in social expectations (especially for women), which leads to a slow process of "parentification," meaning a great sense of responsibility towards adult parents who are unable to establish their own emotional needs, reflecting this in the outside world. This need to please others to fit in contributes to constant dissatisfaction in the people-pleaser, as well as depression, fatigue, and low self-esteem.

Rhea Doll brought the concepts of Winnie and Pippi to life to remind us that, while people-pleasing isn't entirely negative, not having a sense of self can lead to self-annihilation and even self-hatred, precisely because the need to show love for someone is stronger than true feelings.
